Em Nguyen (00:00):

This morning for the first time since 1876, a sitting US cabinet secretary has been impeached.

Speaker 2 (00:07):

The yays are 214 and the nays are 213. The resolution is adopted.

Em Nguyen (00:13):

The Republican lead house narrowly impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. After a failed effort last week, they accused Mayorkas of failing to enforce immigration laws, triggering a crisis at the southern border that has resulted in millions of illegal migrant crossings since President Biden took office.

Speaker 3 (00:32):

It shows that our conference is willing to hold the Biden administration accountable. We did exactly what we should be doing. Now it’s up to the Senate to do their job.

Em Nguyen (00:40):

But the impeachment articles are expected to be rejected by the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats. Majority leader Chuck Schumer calling the move, “A new low for House Republicans.” Democrats, and some Republicans insist this all amounts to simple policy disagreement. House Republicans just days ago rejected a bipartisan border security deal saying it wasn’t tough enough. President Biden warning, history is watching.

Speaker 4 (01:07):

And I say to the House members, House Republicans, you got to decide. Are you going to stand up for freedom? Or are you going to side with terror and tyranny? You’re going to stand with Ukraine? You’re going to stand with Putin? Will you stand with America, or Trump?

Em Nguyen (01:24):

The Senate could take up the impeachment by the end of the month, and that bipartisan border deal also included funding for Israel and the war in Ukraine. That funding was approved separately by the Senate yesterday, but is still hung up in the house.
