Say less. The category is culture’s biggest night.

Speaker 2: (00:08)
The 2022 BET Awards were on Sunday, and brought the house down with killer performances and several surprise guests. Access Hollywood is breaking down the top moments of the night. Diddy was the big honoree of the night, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. The rapper electrified the audience with his performance that featured Lil’ Kim, Mary J. Blige, Nas, Busta Rhymes, and many more. He also paid a sweet tribute to his late ex-girlfriend and mother of his kids, Kim Porter.

Sean Combs: (00:41)
I’d like to dedicate this to everybody y’all lost, and baby girl Kim, this one is for you.

Speaker 2: (00:48)
Diddy’s tribute also had a major surprise, Kanye West. Ye made a rare appearance Sunday night to praise the 52-year-old rapper.

Kanye West: (00:59)
This is my favorite artist. You see what I’m saying? Favorite artist. Everything. Not specifically production, the drip. Back then there was so many rules to hip hop, and he broke all of them.

Speaker 2: (01:25)
During his lengthy speech the Donda rapper also briefly mentioned his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, and seemingly alluded to their divorce.

Kanye West: (01:35)
I go to him for advice to this day. He inspires so many of my choices. So many of my life choices, my wife choices, and here we are. Thanks for that Puff.

Speaker 2: (01:57)
When it was time for him to take the mic, Diddy delivered a moving speech as he talked about his dream for the Black community.

Sean Combs: (02:03)
I got this new dream. I got this dream of Black people being free. I got this dream of us controlling our own destiny. I got us this dream of us taking accountability and to stop killing each other. I got this dream of us being rich, and wealthy, and living on the same block.

Speaker 2: (02:27)
Kanye wasn’t the only surprise guest of the evening. Jack Harlow performed and shocked audience members when he brought out Brandy.

Brandy: (02:36)
Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is world famous. One of the greatest. Living legend. Did I mention my resumé is amazing?

Speaker 2: (02:44)
The 43-year-old singer performed a remix of Jack’s hit song First Class, and later joined him for a dance break that got the entire crowd on their feet. Another major moment of the night, Mariah Carey came out during Latto’s performance and hit one of her signature notes.

Speaker 6: (02:59)
Beep beep, give it up for the one and only Mariah Carey.

Speaker 2: (03:05)
The surprise appearance got everyone from Brandy to Lizzo on their feet. The songstress even received a bouquet of flowers at the end of the performance. There were also some serious moments throughout the night. Women’s rights was a major topic with several stars talking about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday. Janelle Monáe was one artist who took a strong stance towards the issue while introducing the category for Best Female R&B Pop Artist.

Janelle Monáe: (03:33)
I know we’re celebrating us right now, as we should. We absolutely deserve to celebrate, especially now we must celebrate our art by protecting our right and our truths.

Speaker 2: (03:46)
The category’s winner, Jazmine Sullivan, echoed her sentiment and asked men to do their part for the cause.

Jazmine Sullivan: (03:53)
I want to speak directly to the men. We need y’all. We need y’all to stand up. Stand up for us, stand up with us. If you’ve ever benefited from a woman making one of the toughest decisions of her life, which is to terminate a pregnancy, you need to be standing with us. This is not just a woman’s issue. This is everybody’s issue, and we need your support more than ever.
