Lindsey: (00:00) San Antonio police officer has been fired after body camera video showed him shooting a teen in a McDonald's parking lot. Authorities are investigating and have not decided whether to file charges. The police union tells ABC News it will not be representing him. The teen remains in critical condition. Here's ABC's Zohreen Shah. Zohreen Shah: (00:19) Tonight, a San Antonio police officer fired after shooting an unarmed 17 year old Erik Cantu, as he and a female friend ate in their car in a fast food parking lot. According to authorities, rookie officer James Brennand was initially responding to another call at this McDonald's last Sunday. Speaker 3: (00:41) I got a vehicle here that fled from me the other day. Zohreen Shah: (00:44) According to police, he turns his attention to a completely different incident, this maroon car in the parking lot, believing it was a vehicle that fled from him during an attempted stop the night before. Speaker 3: (00:55) Get out of the car. Zohreen Shah: (00:56) Body camera video shows the officer opening the car door without any warning. Brennand reported that Cantu shut the car door, hitting the officer as he reversed. Speaker 3: (01:06) Shots fired. Shots fired. Shots fired. Zohreen Shah: (01:09) Brennand starts shooting at the car multiple times as it drives off. Police found Cantu a block away with multiple gunshot wounds, placing him in the car, but not before placing him in handcuffs, arresting him for evasion and aggravated assault. The officer fired just days later, the San Antonio Police Department saying Brennand was in violation of department training, tactics and procedures. Cantu's friend in the passenger seat was uninjured, but Cantu was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition. Speaker 4: (01:41) It's very hard to think about the fear he had in him when it happened. And the state and condition he's in right now is just... it breaks all of our hearts. He had no weapon. He had a burger in his hand. Zohreen Shah: (01:56) And Lindsey, as for that police union response, they told ABC News they will not be representing that former officer, because he had not finished his probationary period. As for Cantu, all charges against him have been dropped. Lindsey. Lindsey: (02:09) Unclear if that officer will now face charges. Zohreen, thank you. George Stephanopoulos: (02:13) Hi everyone.
