Hurricane Fiona, now Category 4, does major damage to Turks and Caicos Transcript

Now we turn back to that situation in the tropics, Hurricane Fiona still lingering near Turks and Caicos, leaving devastation in its wake.
Eugene Daniel: (00:08)
Yeah, hundreds and thousands are without power, still in the Caribbean. So let’s go ahead and go live to Kaicey Baylor. Kaicey, what are they dealing with on the islands?
Kaicey Baylor: (00:20)
Well, Eugene, Ashley, the hurricane, Hurricane Fiona has left a big mess for multiple islands in the Caribbean. Now, as mentioned, the storm recently passing through Turks and Caicos, and government officials there imposed a curfew, urging people to leave flood-prone areas. Now, the storm could sea levels by five to eight feet above normal. Now, the impact of the storm also killed two people in the Dominican Republic, and nearly 800 people there are displaced. In Puerto Rico, a man swept away by a river has died in the storm and heavy rain left 80% of the population without power, half of the island doesn’t have water service. Now, Portsmouth-based Mercy Chefs had eyes on the storms, and now volunteers have boots on the ground to serve meals to help areas with the greatest needs.

[inaudible 00:01:10] kitchens on the island that we established after Hurricane Maria. So right now, once they arrive, they’ll be able to start determining which kitchen is best, which has the best generator power.

And volunteers brought two water purification units, which can help generate about 300 gallons of clean water per hour for the folks out there. We’re live in Virginia Beach. I’m Kaicey Baylor for 13 News Now.
