Linda Gradstein (00:01):

Israeli military officials said gunmen in Gaza fired at least 400 rockets and mortars at Central and Southern Israel on Wednesday, but said that about 150 of the projectiles either fell short inside Gaza or landed in the open sea. They said remaining ones were shot down by Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile system. The rocket fire in Tel Aviv sent hundreds of thousands of Israelis to shelters and briefly stopped flights from landing in the city. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was prepared to expand the military operation.

Speaker 2 (00:38):

We are in the midst of a battle and prepared for any scenario. My suggestion to our enemies is, don’t mess with us.

Linda Gradstein (00:45):

The latest clashes began early Tuesday when Israel launched an assassination on three members of Islamic Jihad, as well as their wives and several children. Israeli security officials said the three men were responsible for terrorist attacks that killed Israeli civilians. Military leaders say the Israeli operation hurt the Islamic Jihad organization and shows Israel’s intelligence capabilities.

Speaker 3 (01:09):

They understand that we have a very, very good information about what they do, where they do, where they are, and what exactly with whom exactly they speak and about what. And those two elements are very important element that changed the situation on the ground, not only with the Islamic Jihad, but this message was heard carefully by everybody in the Middle East.

Linda Gradstein (01:44):

He also said the latest clashes are part of a broader conflict that shows no sign of ending.

Speaker 3 (01:49):

This struggle is a very long one that include people all over the world because we have enemies that try to influence what is happening here and try to encourage a terrorist group like the Islamic Jihad.

Linda Gradstein (02:06):

The question now is whether the Islamist Hamas movement, which is much larger than Islamic jihad and controls Gaza, will join the fighting. Press reports say Egypt has already begun negotiating a ceasefire. Linda Gradstein for VOA News, Jerusalem.
