House members voted late this afternoon on a plan to keep the government running. Congress has a deadline at midnight on Friday to reach an agreement. ABC’s Reena Roy has the latest.

Speaker 2 (00:12):

For the second time in two months, the nation was on the brink of a government shutdown, Congress voting on a short-term spending bill introduced by newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson. The plan requiring two thirds majority to pass, members passing the proposal.

Speaker 3 (00:29):

We’re pleased with the outcome.

Speaker 2 (00:29):

The unconventional bill dividing funding into two parts and keeps agencies like Veteran Affairs, Transportation, and Housing going until January, and the rest of the government functioning until February.

Speaker 3 (00:41):

We are not going to have a massive omnibus spending bill right before Christmas. This allows us, as conservatives, to go into the fight on the next stages of this.

Speaker 2 (00:50):

Speaker Johnson facing opposition from within his own party. Are you going to vote to pass the CR today? Where do you stand?

Speaker 3 (00:56):

No.

Speaker 4 (00:56):

We’re not cutting any spending.

Speaker 2 (00:57):

Some Democrats Were open to the plan.

Speaker 5 (00:59):

From the very beginning of this Congress, Democrats have made clear that we are going to find common ground with our Republican colleagues on any issue in good faith.

Speaker 6 (01:08):

Leader McConnell and I will figure out the best way to get this done quickly. Neither McConnell nor I want to shut down.

Speaker 2 (01:16):

Now that the continuing resolution is passed, it goes to the Senate, and if it makes it through that hurdle, it will then make it to President Biden’s desk. Reena Roy, ABC News, New York.

So how did Iowa’s House representatives vote for the funding bill? All four representatives voted in favor of it. This includes Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Zach Nunn, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, all representatives, except Nunn, released statements expressing their support of the bill.
