Speaker 1 (00:00):

New Mexico is at the center of a new important finding about our history, as in humans. When did our ancestors first arrive in the Americas? Tommy Lopez breaks down the new revelations behind some very old footprints.

Tommy Lopez (00:15):

Tucked into the beauty of White Sand’s New Mexico is fresh perspective on something old. Finding these footprints there two years ago was a bombshell moment for archeology. And now new research has led to a major finding for the story of humans. We now know this is the oldest sign of human life in the Americas. It tells us our ancestors were here 21 to 23,000 years ago, thousands of years earlier than we thought. Tom Stafford is helping us understand all this.

Thomas Stafford (00:46):

Oh my God. Now we’ve got people at 21 to 23,000, let’s say 10,000 years before what has been accepted-

Tommy Lopez (00:56):

He’s a long time geologist. He’s worked all over the world and he now lives in New Mexico. Stafford says this research marks a major shift in how people believe our ancestors founded the new world.

Thomas Stafford (01:07):

It’s really, really an incredible discovery.

Tommy Lopez (01:09):

There were some doubts before, but now many experts are as sure as anyone could be.

Thomas Stafford (01:14):

This is very good solid evidence for people being here in New Mexico.

Tommy Lopez (01:19):

When and how early humans got here has been a long debated topic, making the finding in New Mexico even more important. We know our ancestors came here from Asia, but we don’t know from where exactly. All right, we have a clearer picture of the timeline, but why should we care? Have you or someone done one of those ancestry tests? This revelation helps us understand all of our origins.

Thomas Stafford (01:44):

That to me is why this is so exciting, because it’s just like 23 and me at White Sands is you’re going further and further and back…

Speaker 1 (01:56):

And Tommy joins us, so there are a lot of footprints there. Tommy, where did the researchers find them? Exactly?

Tommy Lopez (02:01):

So, in White Sands National Park, near the edge of an ancient lake, and we’ll have the link to all that new research on our website, kob.com.

Speaker 1 (02:09):

All right, fascinating stuff. Tommy, thanks.
