Robin: (00:00) Now, with the popular show, Stranger Things, sending another major song from the past running up the charts. The 36 year old Metallica hit, Master of Puppets, getting a magic boost thanks to the hit show. Chris Conley is right here in our studio with that. Good morning, Chris. Chris Conley: (00:15) Hey, good morning, Robin. Lots of series on streaming services unearth those period perfect old songs for us to enjoy, but when Stranger Things does it their selections sometimes hit the charts. What's their secret sauce? Well, the success of the show and the way it utilizes that vintage music is a key element of important scenes. Chris Conley: (00:36) When a 36 year old thrash metal classic turns up nestled between Bad Bunny and Doja Cat on the Spotify top 10 it's, well, pretty strange. Stranger Things to be exact. The series getting its Generation Z viewers hyped up about a 1980s musical gem. Chris Conley: (00:57) The show, deploying Metallica's album rock mega track Master of Puppets, put to use by Joseph Quinn's Eddie Munson in this key scene, and in the process, putting the song on the charts. Chris Conley: (01:11) The Netflix series already giving Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill a big boost. Jason Lipshutz: (01:20) Even though they're totally different songs, and they come from totally different parts of the musical universe of the 1980s, they still tie together within the drama of Stranger Things. Chris Conley: (01:32) Men of Metallica felling over the use of their eight minute epic, "We were all so stoked to see the final result," the band saying in a statement on Instagram, "It's an incredible honor to be such a big part of Eddie's journey." Jason Lipshutz: (01:44) Master of Puppets by Metallica is an eight minute metal song, and it's never hit the Hot 100 before. Chris Conley: (01:54) When it comes to music these days, it seems like everything old gets viewed again, regardless of the size of the budget or the screen. Guns and Roses' Sweet Child of Mine, in the new Thor Love and Thunder. To this now legendary smartphone smash skateboarding to Fleetwood Mac's Dreams, that got a good natured TikTok response from Stevie Nicks herself in roller skates. Jason Lipshutz: (02:20) Not only do you get the original fans of the songs, but you had this whole new generation discovering them. Chris Conley: (02:27) Oh, and I like this in fact, in the wake of their new Stranger Things audience, the band, putting out a message on TikTok, "Everyone is welcome in the Metallica family. Whether you've been a fan for 40 hours, or 40 years, we all share a bond through music." A bond, that's the kind of energy we need more of, guys. Robin: (02:44) Yeah, we do.
