Turning now to the horror unfolding at a 4th of July parade. A mass shooting, leaving at least six people dead and 30 others hurt. It happened in the town of Highland Park, a suburb to the north of Chicago. Cleo Greene has been following this story overnight. Cleo, a horrific turn of events for a town that really was just out trying to enjoy some holiday festivities.

Cleo Greene: (00:19)
Right, Kara. This was supposed to be a fun 4th of July celebration, a parade, and it turned into yet another mass shooting. People on social media, state leaders, responding on social media as well.

Cleo Greene: (00:29)
President Biden here tweeting that, “Jill and I are shocked by the senseless gun violence that has yet again brought grief to an American community on Independence Day. As always, we are grateful for the first responders and law enforcement on the scene. I will not give up fighting the epidemic of gun violence.”

Cleo Greene: (00:45)
Speaking of law enforcement and investigators, after that shooting, they were able to do a quick dive on social media and find a person of interest. That’s Robert E. Crimo III, he is a person of interest and after an hours long manhunt, they were able to find him.

Here’s some new information this morning as well. Now police say that shooters started shooting from a rooftop into the parade crowd, killing six people, sending at least 31 to the hospital, including 25 with gunshot wounds and a child in critical condition. The victims are between the ages of eight and 85 years old. As you can imagine, people, they were running for panic, leaving behind empty strollers and chairs that they were using to enjoy the parade.

And I just looked back at my dad and right behind him, this girl just fell in cold blood and just died.

These are the kinds of injuries that are seen in war. And these poor kids and families who went to a parade, and then… now they… people just don’t feel you can go anywhere.

Cleo Greene: (01:45)
That was a doctor that was actually at the parade, helping injured people. I’m also hearing more of these stories from people that were at the parade. One parent had to put their child in a dumpster for safety.
