Samantha Cortese (00:00):

The Sacramento Mayor has slammed this move, calling it a cruel way to score cheap political points. But who is allegedly scoring those points? Our governor and Attorney General have an idea.

(00:13)
For the second time, in less than a week, South American migrants in Texas were flown on a chartered plane to Sacramento.

Rob Bonta (00:20):

These practices are disgusting, cruel, callous. They’re shameful, they’re wrong. They’re un-American.

Speaker 3 (00:25):

Attorney General Rob Bonta claims. The 20 migrants that landed in the Capitol City Monday morning were tricked, told they’d get help with jobs upon landing. Four days prior, about a dozen migrants were flown in and dropped off at the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento.

Bishop Jamie Soto (00:40):

We had no idea that they were coming, but my staff quickly found some of our community folks who worked with the immigrant community-

Rob Bonta (00:51):

When they set foot in the United States as asylum seekers, they should have been received with that dignity, respect, humanity, and compassion. But instead, they were received with deceit.

Speaker 3 (01:02):

Deceit at the hands of whom?

Samantha Cortese (01:04):

We believe this is the official practice of the State of Florida, and that this is something that is endorsed by and supported by Governor DeSantis. They use official tax dollars to pay for a private vendor to reach out to asylum seekers and migrants and fly them to other states.

Speaker 3 (01:27):

But the DeSantis camp is uncharacteristically mum on these allegations. Last year, Florida sent migrants to Martha’s Vineyard saying they were facilitating the migrants move to Massachusetts, a sanctuary state. California became one in 2017. Today, Texas’ DA was hit with an unlawful restraint lawsuit over that incident. On Twitter, California, governor Gavin Newsom threatened a similar move calling DeSantis a small, pathetic man, and wrote kidnapping charges with a link to California’s penal code.

Samantha Cortese (02:01):

And we reached out to the Florida’s governor’s office to confirm or deny involvement in these migrant flights, but have not yet heard back. In the KTLA news center, Samantha Cortese, KTLA 5 News.
