RevBlogProductivityFun Just Got Better: Online Games That Also Improve Typing Speed

The following post was written by Valerie Doucette, a Revver located in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. She’s worked as a transcriptionist for Rev since January 2017.

Touch typing, or typing with all 10 fingers without looking at the keys, is a skill that is useful to anyone who wants to be more productive and efficient in their work. Fast typing skills are especially important if your work involves transcribing or captioning audio files, as it does for us Rev freelancers.

If you’re looking to improve your typing speed, there are several online typing games that can help improve your speed and accuracy.

When playing these games, remember to practice good typing habits:

  • Use all 10 fingers
  • Keep good posture at your desk
  • Have your hands in the right position on the keyboard
  • Try not to look down at the keys while you type

Start here if you’re looking to warm up your standard typing skills before jumping into the games. Go into typing practice or competition mode to build up your speed and accuracy before tracking your progress with a test.

Typeracer

Compete with other people to type a paragraph; the first person to type it the fastest and with accuracy wins the race. At the end of each race you can see your word-per-minute (WPM) score, which is something you can keep track of from race to race to see how you improve your typing speed.

This is our first choice for a great typing game because it allows you to practice in a way that measures both speed and accuracy.

ZType

This game mimics Space Invaders, a classic favorite. Type the words or letter groupings in order to shoot down the ships in space. Love the music in this one. It’s fun and addictive while helping you to practice your typing at the same time.

Typing Karaoke

This is a fun immersive game where you type according to the unfolding of a popular song in real time. The difficulty increases when it’s a faster song. It has nice graphics and sound quality for an overall enjoyable experience. This one focuses more on speed than accuracy but is good for practice nonetheless.

Wrap-up

Like any worthwhile skill, learning how to be a good touch typer requires practice, patience, and time. Do you have a favorite typing game that we didn’t mention? Please tell us more in the comments.
