Sound delicious? You don’t know the half of it.
We’ve learned over the years that, for many customers, adding captions to videos isn’t fun.
And that’s to put it nicely.
So, we figured out how to burn them in, bake them on, embed them. Whatever you want to call it, it’s the most requested feature at Rev, ever.
And YOU? You’re the lucky duck who can try this feature out for free. Join the Open Captions beta today and experience the goodness of never needing to add captions to videos yourself again! Simply click below for instant access!
What are Open Captions?
Why would I need Open Captions?
They work everywhere
Open captions are useful for video players that don’t support the display of timed text (Twitter is one of those), or where you don’t want your audience to be able to turn captions on or off.
Viewers love ‘em
Turns out, 85 percent of Facebook videos are watched with the sound off. Unlike closed captions, open captions don’t rely on your audience knowing how to turn them on. This increases engagement rates on social platforms like Facebook and TikTok.
You can make them look nice
Open captions allow for easy control over caption styles. This includes text-alignment, font color, background color, and more.
They’re less work
You don’t need to add a captions file to your video file separately. The work of adding captions to videos adds up. With open captions, your caption file is “burned in” to the video file so you don’t need to manually add them.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What are Open Captions?
Open Captions are seen by everyone who watches the video. Burned-in captions are a permanent feature on the video and can’t be turned on and off since they’re encoded into the picture.
How are Open Captions different from Closed Captions?
The primary difference between closed captions and open captions is visibility. Closed captions are able to be toggled on and off. Open captions and “burned in” to the video and will always be displayed.
How long does it take to generate a video with burned-in captions?
The burned-in video will not be downloaded instantaneously like the other caption output formats; instead, users will be notified via email once their burned-in video is ready, which takes roughly one-third of the length of the video (i.e. a 10-minute video may take about 3 minutes to burn the captions in).
What is the quality of burned-in video users will receive?
Rev will generate a high-quality video with burned-in captions. We store the original media that users upload and create captions to match this media file as best we can: we’ll try to return a file with the same encoding, bitrate, size, and dimensions.
Burned-in video will be returned as the same file type as the one uploaded (i.e. if you upload an .mp4 file to Rev, your burned-in video will also be an .mp4).
